Announcing Our Biggest Match Challenge Ever, Help Us Double Our Impact

This year, we at Caminos de Agua are elated to be celebrating our tenth anniversary of working in collaboration with local communities, grassroots organizations, leading research institutions from around the globe, and supporters like you – all coming together to provide access to clean drinking water for so many in our region, and well beyond, whose health and wellbeing is being increasingly threatened.
This decade of impact simply wouldn’t have been possible without the early and continuing help and commitment from an incredible network of individual givers who have made this work a reality. To celebrate this milestone, two of our closest and oldest supporters – who were there to help Caminos get off the ground ten years ago – are taking their contribution to a new level to help launch us into our Next Ten Years of work. These sponsors, who wish to remain anonymous, are generously putting up a $25,000 dollar Match Challenge to our entire community. That means that every dollar you give will automatically be doubled – up to $25,000 dollars – through the end of October. This is by far our most ambitious match challenge to date, and we need your help to get us there. When asked why they are sponsoring this campaign, our sponsors had this to say:

Our regional water crisis continues to grow, affecting more than 700,000 people living in the Upper Rio Laja watershed – a region confronting severe water scarcity and contamination issues, which are creating multiple health, social, and economic problems for those most vulnerable in our region. Arsenic and fluoride, the two most prevalent water contaminates that plague community water supplies throughout our region, are extremely difficult to remove and largely overlooked by the greater water development sector. These chemicals are closely linked to increasing levels of chronic kidney disease, dental and crippling skeletal fluorosis (permanent staining of teeth and bones becoming deformed and fragile), skin lesions, cognitive development and learning impairments in children, and several kinds of cancer.

At Caminos de Agua, we have developed an unusually collaborative approach to address these issues: in addition to years of experience collaborating with local communities and grassroots organizations, we partner with government, leading research universities, and other institutions and NGOs to develop appropriate solutions. Through these collaborations, we’ve created both groundbreaking technologies that deliver more affordable, adaptable, and durable alternatives that address these modern water challenges as well as equally innovative social implementation models – all to ensure access to clean water in dramatically underserved rural and urban communities.
Over the last decade, we have developed a unique model that bridges technical innovation with social impact, and during the next 6 weeks, we will be bringing you a series of stories that highlight how our programs and their impact have evolved over these last 10+ years, and where we are taking this work into the future. So, please stay tuned!
